Zoetrope
Invented nearly two centuries ago, the zoetrope was one of the first devices capable of animating an image: a sequence of still drawings or figures that, when seen in rapid succession, becomes motion. Its foundation lies in persistence of vision, already understood in the 1800s: when the brain is stimulated quickly enough, it stops separating individual frames and blends them into one continuous action.
To showcase the capabilities of Candy Bake 800, we brought that same principle into the present in a spectacular, physical form: a three-dimensional zoetrope. A multi-level mechanical carousel built across four stacked tiers, filled with dozens of miniature sculptures and lit by a synchronized stroboscopic light. No screens, no software, just material, rhythm, and precision.
Each sculpture is a real, physical frame, a successive step in the action, a carrot rolling, an ingredient falling, an oven opening. As the structure spins and the light pulses at exactly the right intervals, motion appears before your eyes: live animation, crafted entirely by hand.
The installation is built around a key message: the oven can cook four different food categories at the same time. To translate this visually, we designed a narrative path that culminates in a collective final scene: the oven opens and welcomes four dishes, dedicated to meat, fish, vegetables, and pizza.
The story unfolds across the zoetrope’s four levels:
In a world dominated by digital imagery, the zoetrope reminds us of the power of the tangible: sculpted objects, synchronized light, mechanical motion. Each tier is a moment in the process, each sculpture a gesture frozen in time. Only when seen together, one after another, does the story come alive.
A project that merges craftsmanship and storytelling, giving literal form to the idea of variety.
